UP Cebu to Hold a Media Literacy Seminar-Workshop
The Mass Communication Program of the University of the Philippines Cebu will hold a Media Literacy Seminar-Workshop on December 13, 2014, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Interactive Learning Center Audio-Visual Room located at the second floor of the Administration Building. The topics covered in this seminar-workshop are the following: introduction to media literacy, advertising literacy, news literacy, film literacy, and digital literacy. The Mass Communication professors will serve as the speakers in this seminar-workshop.
According to the National Telemedia Council based in US, media literacy is the ability to understand, question, evaluate, respond, create and/or produce, and respond thoughtfully to the media we consume. Luis Teodoro, former Dean of the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication, defines media literacy as “the state of appreciation or understanding by a particular public of the mass media.” He wrote that media literacy has become a necessary skill as the world becomes ever more complex and the media become more and more pervasive.
The Media Literacy Seminar-Workshop organized by the Mass Communication faculty of UP Cebu aims to address the need to campaign for media literacy education among the Filipino public. It is an extension program under the Center for Media Education of UP Cebu which was launched on March 20, 2014.
The Seminar-Workshop is open to all who may be interested particularly teachers from grade school to college (both public and private), graduate students of whatever degree program, professionals, parents, and students. Workshop activities in the afternoon session will be made appropriate for each group of participants.
