Unveiling Cebu’s Big 5 and the “1521” Magazine
Cebu is no longer just a pivotal point in the first circumnavigation of the world, as it was in the early 1600s; these days, it often seems the tourism world is “circumnavigating” Cebu. Recently, Cebu was ranked as second Friendliest Island in the World for 2016 by the New York-based travel magazine Travel + Leisure and second Best Island in the World in the Conde Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards.
Cebu’s Provincial Tourism launched on Friday (October 20) two projects that will promote sustainable tourism in Cebu, as well as its culture, history, and heritage. With the launching of Cebu’s Big 5, community based tourism in five of Cebu’s towns- Alcoy (with its bird-watching and nature trek), Alegria (with its wellness and adventure tours), Aloguinsan (with its Bojo River Cruise), Argao (with its culinary tour), and Boljoon (with its heritage tour) will get promoted.
Together with the launching of Cebu’s Big 5 is also the “1521”, a quarterly magazine of the Province of Cebu, written by some of the best writers in Cebu and Boboi R. Costas as the editor-in-chief, with images from some of the best photographers of Cebu. It features Cebu’s very best- rich heritage, storied history, diverse culture, and compelling destinations.
Another highlight of the event was the food offered by the chefs of the Golden Prince Hotel and Cebu Parklane International Hotel. The food serves as the representative of the Slow Food Movement, which strives to preserve traditional and local cuisine and encourages farming of plants, seeds, and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystem.
