Typhoon ‘Nangka’ Likely to Avoid PAR

(PNA) — Typhoon “Nangka” will likely avoid entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Tuesday.

In a phone interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said “based on current weather data the typhoon has a low chance of entering the PAR.”

PAGASA earlier warned the typhoon will enter PAR if it heads westward; while it will avoid PAR when it continues its northward direction.

Aurelio added PAGASA has not monitored other weather formations outside the PAR.

PAGASA has also warned that the southwest monsoon might bring flash floods to the Ilocos region and Benguet province on Tuesday.

In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin Tuesday, which is a 24-hour forecast, PAGASA said “monsoon rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides will be experienced over Ilocos region and the province of Benguet.”

The southwest monsoon — better-known as “hanging habagat” — brings rains to the country from April to October.

PAGASA also warned occasional rains will likely be experienced in the Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and the rest of Cordillera.

Other parts of the country, including Metro Manila, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms.

The archipelago will also experience moderate to strong winds coming from the southwest, causing seas to be moderate to rough.

Meanwhile, PAGASA has issued a gale warning over the seaboards of Luzon, adding strong to gale force winds are expected from the southwest monsoon.

It advised fishing boats and other all seacraft not to head out to sea, while also warning larger sea vessels against huge waves. (PNA) JBP/JLD
