Typhoon Glenda Kills 3 in NegOr

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 7 on Wednesday reported three children died of drowning while crossing the flooded rivers of Negros Oriental during the wake of typhoon Glenda on Tuesday.

OCD 7 Coordinator Allen Cabaron during the Kapihan sa PIA held at the Provincial Information Office at the Provincial Capitol identified the male victim as Julie Nodales, 10, a resident of Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.

Cabaron added that Nodales and his younger sister, 6, were crossing a Bayawan river while heading home from their suspended classes.

Cabaron also said that the other victim was also a girl, 9, succumbed to death while taking a bath at a flooded river in Sta. Catalina City , also in Negros Oriental.

According to Cabaron, the girl stood up on a big stone when she accidentally slipped due to a heavy current of waters. She unfortunately hit her head against another stone causing her instantaneous death.

While the Nodales siblings were found dead a few meters away from the area where they made to cross were alone. Their parents and relatives failed to fetch them from school, said Cabaron.

He added that heavy rainfalls in Negros Oriental has caused the waters in the river to overflow beyond its normal level.

Cebu City and the whole province has no records of injuries and casualties, and even damage to property during the onslaught of typhoon Glenda.

Baltazar Tribunalo Jr. Chief, Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) and Simeon A. Romarate, Chief, Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) have made the same statements during the Kapihan sa PIA.

They said that every municipal and barangay DRRMCs were already positioned in their respective areas of responsibility even before a storm signal was announced by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
