Twitter Accounts of Several Prominent Figures and Major Companies Hacked

Published

on

Twitter accounts of several prominent individuals and companies such as Apple, Barack Obama, and Elon Musk have been hacked Wednesday in what is appears to be the worst security breach in Twitter’s history.

The hack seemed to center on the promotion of a bitcoin scam wherein accounts appear to ask for Bitcoin donations asking to double the donations for their “giving back” to communities or fans.

The barrage of tweets from hacked accounts started with Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter account when Musk “tweeted” about making a donation. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’ also tweeted the exact same message.

After the Musk and Gates tweets, the accounts of other prominent figures followed suit as the Twitter accounts of President Barack Obama, Kanye West, Warren Buffet, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, among others, promoted the bitcoin scam. The Twitter accounts of Apple and Uber were also compromised.

Twitter has since then confirmed that employee tools were used in the hack.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wrote, “Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened. We’re diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened.” on a tweet.

Twitter has since then locked the compromised accounts until fully secured.

“We have locked accounts that were compromised and will restore access to the original account owner only when we are certain we can do so securely.” Twitter said in a statement

“We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly,” it said. (GFB)
