Turkish Envoy Proposes Sisterhood Ties with Cebu City
Newly installed Ambassador of Turkey to the Philippines Esra Cankorur has proposed a sisterhood agreement between the city of Izmir, Turkey and Cebu City in Central Philippines.
“We will be very pleased to see you in Izmir to sign the agreement,” Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama quoted Cankorur as saying.
Rama said the ambassador, who paid him a courtesy call, also invited him to visit the Turk city within the year.
The mayor said he might be available to fly to Turkey in October.
Rama said he believes a sister-city agreement will improve the business relationship between the two cities.
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey and has a strong industrial sector.
“A sister-city agreement brings two countries to be not too exclusive and it would bring an enhancement of diplomatic ties,” Rama said.
Some of Cebu City’s sister-cities are Haarlemmermeer of The Netherlands, Xiamen in China, Yeosu in Korea and Kaohsiung in Taiwan and several other cities in the United States. (PNA) LAP/EB
