Turkish Authorities Tear Gas Protesters, Arrests Social Media Users
Turkish authorities have fired tear gas to the thousands of protesters in Ankara and detained several social media users accused of spreading false information on the protests.
Thousands gathered and chanted “Tayyip istifa!” or “Tayyip resign!” in the streets. The protests erupted after people filled the Turkish capital on Wednesday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan.
Two people have been killed while hundreds have been injured in the demonstrations.
At least 20 social media users have been arrested on accusations of spreading false information about the protests.
According to Anadolu Agency news service, authorities are still in the lookout for several other social media users who are also accused of disseminating false information on the national unrest.
The government’s response to the demonstrations has sparked criticism from protesters and human rights organizations.
