TriAksyon 2018 Includes Race for Future Local ‘Sports Heroes’
A special race exclusively for budding Capiceño triathlon athletes aged 16 to 19 will be a new category of the 2nd Capiz International Triathlon dubbed “TriAksyon 2018” on April 14 to 15 in the aim to discover and develop local sports heroes for the multi-sport competition.
“We are going to develop and give special attention to the winners until they become our national heroes for the sports,” said TriAksyon 2018 chairperson Greg Atienza during a recent media interaction for the upcoming international event.
TriAksyon 2018, which highlights the province’s charter anniversary celebration, is expected to be bigger and more star-studded with the confirmed participation of triathlon Southeast Asian Games medalists Nikko Huelgas and John Leerams Chicano, national medalists, and celebrity athletes, among others.
“Let the elite and professionals, including the kids, fight in their own category as we will have our own special race,” he added.
Philippine Triathlon Team coach Melvin Fausto supported the new category noting that there is a need to develop and create future sports heroes as triathlon medalists like Huelgas and Chicano will move on to their respective careers in the future.
“We need new champions and I am sure we can develop in Capiz,” he stressed, adding that a junior triathlon athlete who won in last year’s TriAksyon is a product of a local sports hero program in Cebu.
The coach also gave assurance to help local coaches in training qualified triathlon winners of the category.
The “swim, bike, and run” contest intends to develop kids into the sports and promote the province as a sports tourism destination.
Triathletes will be treated to scenic views, historic sites, and gastronomic local cuisine adventures, among others.
