Toledo Landslide Kills 1, Mining Firm Stops Operation
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7’s Mines and Geosicences Bureau (MGB) has stopped the operation of a mining firm in Barangay Biga, Toledo City, after a landslide killed one person last Wednesday.
DENR 7 spokesperson Ed Llamedo said the stoppage order came after representatives from the Mines and Geo Sciences Bureau did an ocular inspection at the site and discovered that the cause of the landslide was the softening of the oil at the North East Carmen Tip. He said the mining operation has to stop while the investigation is still on going.
Last week’s incident claimed the life of Harren Bolo Plarisan, a heavy truck operator, and wounded Nonito Surig, excavator truck operator, and Bobet Abangan, bulldozer operator. All of whom were workers of the open pit mine of Carmen Copper Corporation in Barangay Biga. Llamedo said the mining company has also assured to shoulder the expenses of the victims.
