Tokyo Governor Criticized For Over Spending, Resigns
TOKYO, Japan – Tokyo’s governor Yoichi Masuzoe, 67, submitted his resignation on Wednesday, June 15. Masuzoe was critized for over spending and received a vote of no-confidence in the local assembly.
Masuzoe had already informed the speaker of the Tokyo legislature of his resignation before lawmakers made a no-confidence motion later that same day, media reported.
Officials could not immediately confirm the reports made.
Masuzoe’s resignation is said to unlikely affect the city’s ability to host the 2020 Olympics. Although, his lavish spending on official overseas trips, online purchases of art and accommodation at high-end hotels and spas brought fresh embarrassment for the scandal -plagued Games.
Although Masuzoe has faced numerous media and legislative grilling, he has denied breaking any laws but admitted ethical lapses and has repeatedly apologized.
