The Strange Beasts: An Art Toy Show
This October 25, 2014, at exactly 6pm, The Chillage will present an art toy show entitled, “The Strange Beasts”.
The exhibit will feature, “Kaiju” inspired art toys. Kaiju, which means ’strange beast’ in Japanese is a term used to refer to a genre of “Tokusatsu”, entertainment. “Kaiju”, films usually showcase monsters of any form, usually attacking a major Japanese city or engaging another (or multiple) monster(s) in battle.
Related terms include ,” kaijūeiga”,a monster movie featuring giant monsters or a single monster. “Kaijin” which refers to roughly humanoid monsters and ,”Daikaiju”, specifically meaning the larger variety of monsters.
Godzilla is an example of a ,”Daikaiju”. Other examples include “Gamera”, “Mothra”, “Rodan”, “King Ghidorah”, “Mechagodzilla” and “Daimajin”. The term ,”ultra-kaiju”, is longhand for,”kaiju”, in the Ultra Series.
From the movies, “Kaiju” has emerged during the recent years as one of the main genres of art toys.
Kaiju toy art asks the artist to explore the strange places of their minds, the macabre, the dark, or just the plain weird. This show will bring to life the strange beasts that Cebuano artists have been playing around in their sketchbooks and in their minds.
The exhibit will include prominent artists in Cebu such as Mona Alcudia, Uzi Emperado, Happy Garaje Peter Corazo, Jethro Estimoand Carlo Rodriguez workers and artisans.
The Chillage is located at G/F Adnama Bldg., Larrazabal Avenue, North Reclamation, 6014 Mandaue City.
