The Advantages of a Digital Detox

Published

on

A digital detox is where you power off your electronic devices and spend some time away from them. Whether it’s your cell phone, computer, laptop, tablet, music player or television, you can’t use any of them for a certain period of time and have to find other things to do instead.

What are the advantages of a digital detox?

Personal time: A digital detox is not just a break from the gadgets in your life, it’s a break from everything that those gadgets connect you to. By switching them off, you get a break from all of it and get to spend some time with yourself.

Mental clarity: While it may be a bit unnerving without your electronics at first, you will slowly start to unwind and get used to the peace. You will be able to pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, reconnect with yourself and gain some mental clarity.

Reduced stress: Disconnecting from everything will help to reduce the stress that you carry around, ease any anxiety problems that you might have and prevent you from getting depressed.

Improved health: Electronics come with several health problems, including strained eyes, hunched backs, hooked thumbs and the dangers of radiation. A digital detox takes you away from all of that, if just for a few days.

How to do a digital detox?

Plan it out: Doing a digital detox is not as easy as switching off your electronics and disappearing. You will have to plan it out in advance, choosing the best time to do it and making all the arrangements. Weekends and holidays are recommended as the best time to do it. Before you begin, it is very important for you to inform all the people that might try to get in touch with you, so that they don’t panic when you are unavailable.

Choose an activity: The idea of spending all that time with yourself can be daunting, so choose an activity that you can look forward to doing. Different people choose to take their breaks in different ways. Some people like to go away on holiday, while others like to spend time reconnecting and rebuilding their relationship with their friends and family. Another way to do it is to spend time in nature, allowing it to heal you on a subconscious level.

Motivate yourself: It is difficult to stay away from electronics for so long, and many people find themselves caving after a short time. You should formulate the reasons why you are doing the detox and remind yourself of them when you are tempted to give up. It will be hard initially, but it will get easier once you get used to it and towards the end you’ll find yourself wanting to do it again.
