Talisay OKs Cebu City to Use Sanitary Landfill
After the total closure of Inayawan sanitary landfill last January 15, Talisay City allows the City of Cebu to dump waste temporarily in Barangay Tapul, Talisay City.
The Talisay sanitary landfill, operated by the City government since 2005, has an area of two hectares situated along the Mananga watershed. The landfill also accepts garbage from nearby towns such as Minglanilla.
Jade Ponce, Chairman of the Cebu City Solid Waste Management, said Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama and Talisay City Mayor Johnny Delos Reyes had made an earlier agreement just before the permanent closure of the Inayawan landfill.
Ponce said that in principle, the two chief executives had already agreed that Cebu City will dispose certain tons of waste in Talisay landfill, citing advantage for Talisay City as it can generate revenues out of the fees that the City of Cebu will be paying for its garbage.
As to the amount of the tipping fees that Cebu City will pay, Ponce said they are still negotiating it, including the allowable volume of garbage from Cebu City that will be dumped in Talisay. Ponce added that they are eyeing for a 50 tons of garbage per day which will be later increased to 100 tons in the succeeding months.
The Inayawan landfill was ordered closed by the Cebu City government as it has reached its lifespan, whose continued use would cause health hazards to public health and environment. The landfill has been operating for 15 years.
