Talisay Fisherfolks to Receive Cash

Amid reports of contamination of the seawaters in some parts of Metro Cebu after last week’s ship collision incident, Talisay City Mayor Johnny delos Reyes will give cash assistance to Talisay fisherfolks.

Delos Reyes said each affected fisherman will get P5,000 which they can use for the moment while the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7 (BFAR) has not yet announced that it is safe to eat seafoods from the seawaters of Cebu, especially in the areas where there are massive oil spill.

This week BFAR 7 advised local fishers to refrain from catching fishes and other marine products in the cities of Talisay, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Cordova town. There were already reports of dead fishes found floating in the water surface at the height of last Friday’s tragic sea incident. The oil spill stemmed from the collision between a cargo ship and a passenger vessel, where MV St. Thomas Aquinas was badly hit resulting its oil reserves to leak out.

Delos Reyes said the City Social Welfare Office will assess the affected fishermen for the final list of beneficiaries.
