The Cebu Provincial government has approved the request of Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas to temporarily suspend the quarrying operations in Talisay City last December 6, 2021.

In a meeting, Cebu Provincial Governor Gwendolyn Garcia formally approved the temporary suspension of the quarry operations in said city.

Gullas said suspension shall be lifted after a traffic plan is created for the trucks traversing the city’s roads during their operation.

“Quarry operations shall be suspended until a traffic plan concerning the number of trucks going to and from the quarry sites has been approved by the City Government,” Gullas said in his Facebook post.

The Talisay City government will create a committee to meet with stakeholders regarding the creation of the traffic plan.

“The committee will be composed of our City Administrator, City Legal Officer, Business Process and Licensing Office (BPLO) head, our CT-TODA chief, our LDRRMO chief, and three city councilors namely those heading the committees on traffic, laws; and environment and natural resources,” Gullas said.

Although the city has already its truck ban, the committee will have to review and modify it.

The suspension of the quarrying operations in Talisay City came after the traffic incident last December 3 that resulted in 5 deaths.

It was found out that the truck that rammed into the vehicles involved in the accident was carrying minerals from the quarry site in the city.

Gullas also sent his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in that traffic incident.

“I’m saddened by what happened last Friday. I’m sad that people have died. I’m sad families lost loved ones that day. Again, my condolences to the bereaved families and my prayers to all still in the hospital,” Gullas said. (ASC)
