Talisay City Council Passes Resolution Seeking PHP600 Monthly Aid to Solo Parents
The Talisay City Council has approved a resolution that will allow City Hall to provide a financial aid of PHP600 a month to each solo parent in the city’s 22 barangays.
Talisay City Councilor Socrates Fernandez, a former mayor, initially proposed to provide an allowance of PHP300 a month, saying majority of the city’s solo parents are indigents.
But opposition Councilor Dennis Basillote proposed to increase the financial assistance from PHP300 to PHP600, which the City Council approved.
The resolution still has to be approved by Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes.
The Talisay City Solo Parents and Workers Association (TCSPWA), a city-recognized federation, currently has 438 members.
The TCSPWA, considered the first of its kind in Cebu Province, was initiated by the Talisay City Social Welfare Office through its head, Felipa Solana.
The group was created through an ordinance approved by the Talisay City Council in 2005, as mandated by Republic Act 8972, the Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000.
This law defines a solo parent as one who cares for a child alone due to the death of a spouse, physical and mental incapacity of spouse, imprisonment of the spouse for at least a year, legal separation from spouse for at least a year, annulment of marriage and abandonment by the spouse for at least a year.
