Talisay City Council Passes Resolution Granting PhP500 Cash Aid to PWDs
The Talisay City Council has passed a resolution giving a yearly cash assistance to each of the city’s 1,000 persons with disability (PWDs) a PhP500 stipend.
Talisay City Councilor Socrates Fernandez, author of the resolution, said the yearly stipend is in accordance with Republic Act No. 7277 or the Magna Carta for PWDs.
He said the annual financial assistance could help promote self-reliance among the city’s PWDs.
The amount will be taken from the PWD sectors’ welfare program, and will be coursed through the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
During the discussion, Councilors Dennis Basillote and Valeriano Ylanan, who are allied with the mayor, disagreed with the amount of the stipend.
Basillote said the City should give PhP2,000 to each PWD instead of only PhP500, while Ylanan wants the stipend to be PhP1,000 a year.
But Fernandez said that as much as he wants the city to give the PWDs a bigger amount, giving PhP2,000 to each PWD is too much and the city might not be able to sustain it. (PNA) SCS/EB/SSC
