Summer Hair Problems in Men

Published

on

Summer season is not only difficult for you, but also for your hair too. For many, the scorching weather during summer months is like a nightmare, making them vulnerable against hair problems. For some, the damage done by the season is substantial – as they experience 3 to 4 times hair loss compared to the rest of the year.

What triggers hair problems during summer?

During the summer months, the production of the hormones which regulate the hair’s growth revs up. As a result of the accelerated growth during these months, one succumbs to hair-related conditions, most common being hair loss. In most cases, hormone activity returns to earlier normal routine in a few weeks. However, the degree of risk of hair problems also depends on the state of your hair. For example, if one’s hair is losing density for quite some time, it will happen more rapidly during the summer months.

Hair loss

One loses more hair during summer season and in the fall because of the abnormal secretion of the hormones that regulate hair growth. Dehydration is another reason for hair loss; the hot weather makes one dehydrated. What we eat is the food for hair and water is an important part of nutrition for hair. Being the integumentary system, if hair doesn’t get much needed water, they will fall.

Hair Loss Solutions: How to deal with hair loss during summer months

To stop gradual hair loss, you should deal with stress in your life, eat healthy (especially the vitamins, minerals and protein-enriched foods), loosen up hair, change the way you style your hair and abstain from blow dryer. If you are not able to slow down hair loss with remedies, you can still treat hair loss.

The three common ways to treat hair loss include medications (that promote hair growth), surgery (transplanting hair from one area to balding area) and cosmetic treatment (hairpieces and wigs to make hair look fuller).

Dry, Flaky Scalp

The scalp may become itchy owing to the inflammation by summer heat.

How to get rid of dry, flaky scalp: If you have mild flakes, you need to wash your hair with a shampoo formulated for dry hair. Among other things you can do include use a shampoo containing ketoconazole (anti-yeast shampoo), avoid styling products and massage scalp once a day. Moreover, balanced and healthy eating is requisite for hair care.

Scalp Sunburn

Owing to prolonged exposure to the sun during the hot days of summer, scalp may get burnt. Scalp sunburn is as easy phenomenon as regular sunburn, being caused easily if the scalp is not protected. It happens more in the small areas or patches, such as the part in the hairline or over large areas that do not contain thick hair. The condition may lead to hair loss, and can even cause baldness.

How to cope with scalp sunburn: Gently massage a UV-healing, cleansing shampoo into scalp, apply antibiotic ointment (to open blisters), apply aloe-vera extract to the burnt area and avoid products with alcohol. If you don’t seem to get relief, see a doctor.

Greasy Scalp Issues

The sun rays during summer months increase the hormonal activity by manifolds. Consequently, the scalp starts to become a bit greasy.

How to deal with greasy scalp issues: Use shampoos designed for oily hair and skip the conditioner and avoid brushing your hair too often as it makes the glands in the scalp to produce more oil or sebum.

Change in Hair Texture

A prolonged exposure to sun during the summer months can even change the hair’s texture, making your hair look bad.

How to restore hair texture: Apply petroleum base to the scalp and hair, deep condition and apply a relaxer help a great deal to restore hair’s texture. Moreover, scrub your scalp (massage after hair wash) to increase blood flow and oil production.

There is no reason to prevent you from enjoying summers. Enjoy your time in the sun, getting out and being as active as you are in the other seasons. Just take a few precautions to ensure that your hair and scalp do not take the plight of summers.
