Students Urged to Explore Careers in Agriculture
Iloilo City (PIA6) — – Filipino students are encouraged to explore careers in agriculture.
Dr. Saturnina Halos, Chair of the Department of Agriculture’s Biotechnology Advisory Team (DA-BAT), noted that only a few students in the country are taking agricultural courses due to the misconception that there is no money in agriculture.
“Agriculture is fun and profitable and there are huge opportunities for advancement,” Halos emphasized.
She said that the Philippine Science High School, in coordination with DA, will implement a new curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 as part of the K-12 program.
“This is intended for students to be aware that a career in agriculture is also profitable. That with the use of scientific practices, you can also earn,” she said.
The proposed curriculum will include Agri Science courses 1 and 2. Agri Science 1 will involve crop production and food processing while Agri Science 2 will focus on aquaculture and livestock production.
“We will be training teachers, look into the curriculum, help them with needed facilities,” she said.
She said that the new curriculum will also include how to make a business plan and how to look for potential markets.
She also shared that DA also offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students who are into biotechnology. (JSC/LTP-PIA6 Iloilo)
