Senate Passes Magna Carta of Seafarers
The Philippine Senate has approved the Magna Carta of Seafarers in a final vote, with 14 Senators voting in favor of Senate Bill 2221. The legislation was created to establish the rights of Filipino mariners and set standards for their training, overseas employment, and retirement.
The Magna Carta seeks to ensure Filipino seafarers are guaranteed decent, just, and humane working conditions aboard sea-going vessels. This approval comes just two days after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos declared the bill urgent, hastening its passage.
The approval of the Magna Carta marks a significant step in protecting seafarers’ rights in the Philippines. However, it’s important to note that fishermen are not included in the aforementioned Magna Carta.
In 2022, over 489,000 Filipino seafarers worldwide contribute significantly to the global maritime industry, on both passenger and cargo vessels. (ASC)
