Seawater, Future Water Supply in Metro Cebu
Cebu being surrounded by sea, an official of Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) said that seawater could be the water source for Metro Cebu in the future.
According to MCWD General Manager Jose Jr., desalinated water could be the potential water source to help solve the problem of water shortage in the metro.
Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara, Manager of MCWD Community Affairs admitted that MCWD could not solve the water shortage problem in Metro Cebu.
Kara added that the water shortage could be addressed through political, social and environmental affairs.
Kara also appeals to the city council to pass a law that allows companies that operates desalination plants and companies supplying to MCWD, to let them purchase power from cheaper suppliers to lessen the price for customers.
MCWD also suggests that the city government should also promote rainwater harvesting and entice companies to use green technologies by offering more incentives.
By 2022, MCWD is planning to supply 100,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day to supply the water demand in Mactan Island. (ASC)
