Scouts Jamboree: Cultivating a Happy, Better MisOr
Misamis Oriental revitalizes anew the scouting movement in the province in a bid to promote the culture of lasting peace in Mindanao and advance its tourism program as scouts and scouters gathered in the 6th ‘A Happy MisOr Scouts Jamboree’ held at DepEd Park, Civoleg, Lunotan, this city.
Vice Governor Joey G. Pelaez, regular member of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and council chairman of BSP Misamis Oriental, cited that the scouts can develop their character and values by joining scouting activities.
In the opening ceremonies, he discussed that involving the youth in scouting activities like this would provide them with skills necessary to lead in a direction of growth and engagement.
Thus he encouraged the scouts to experience more educational outdoor living, to mold, empower, and help prepare the youth for their future.
Meanwhile, the vice governor said upcoming various activities are in the offing.
The jamboree is pursuant to Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 76, s. 2012 on Revitalizing Boy Scouting in Schools nationwide.
Scouting or the scout movement aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills which include camping, woodcraft, first aid, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports.
A scout learns the cornerstones of the scout method, scout promise, and scout law.
These are designed to instill character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership in boys through a structured program of outdoor activities.
For Marie A. Pabillore, learner of Misamis Oriental National School, she learned much from the jamboree as the method include spending time together in small groups with shared experiences and activities, as well as emphasizing good citizenship and decision-making.
Complying with DO 76, BSP-Misamis Oriental, on the other hand, spearheads scouting orientation and training course for newly-hired teachers and personnel. (eor/PIA)
