The Municipal Government of Consolacion held its “Sarok Making” contest at SM Consolacion on Sunday, February 2. The said contest is part of various activities prepared by Consolacion in line with its centennial celebration on February 6.

Sarok is a traditional wide-brimmed hat made of bamboo strips and banana leaves which is commonly used by farmers to protect themselves from extreme heat of the sun and rain.

Consolacion Mayor Joannes Alegado said that sarok symbolizes Consolacion, that is why people should value and preserve it.

The mayor also called out the youth to always remember what sarok has brought and contributed to their town.

“Sarok is still relevant nowadays, aside a symbol of town, it symbolizes resilience, it is a symbol of beauty and rich culture of Consolacion,” Mayor Alegado said.

The weaving part shows that we as a people are united, now, we are trying to innovate the use and functions of sarok,” the mayor added.

Last year, Mayor Alegado issued the Executive Order No.11 where the preservation and making of sarok is included in the curriculum of the Department of Education (DepED) Consolacion Division.
