Russia to Supply Fertilizers to PH
Russia has vowed to supply traditional fertilizer urea to the Philippines, according to the Department of Agriculture- Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (DA-FPA)
This comes as the supply of fertilizer globally has further worsened.
According to FPA Deputy Executive Director Myer Mula in a virtual presser, Russia called DA to express their interest to supply the Philippines with fertilizer.
“We are looking at how to solve these things. We have meetings with Russia, they have responded, I just received a call that they are willing to supply us the fertilizer,” Mula said.
However, the importation volume is not yet determined, according to DA Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Noel Reyes.
“We will talk about the volume price soon,” Reyes said.
The country’s fertilizer supply is currently at risk, according to Mula. She attributed the supply limitation in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mula also added that the fertilizer supply of the Philippines currently is still import-dependent.
Meanwhile, the Philippines is also expecting the arrival of fertilizer supply from multiple countries such as Southeast Asian neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia. The country is also expecting the arrival of fertilizers from China.
DA added that 600,000 metric tons of fertilizer are needed for the cropping seasons of the next few months. (GFB)
