Roxas Announces Government Service Caravan for Cebu BPO Workers
In cooperation with the provincial government of Cebu, Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Mar Roxas announced a caravan for employees of business processing outsourcing (BPO) companies in Cebu to help them avail of government services easily and conveniently.
“Maa-access nila ang serbisyo ng gobyerno nang hindi kinakailangang pumunta sa head office,” Roxas said during a breakfast meeting with several call center employees working at the IT Park in Cebu City.
According to statistics, more than one million Filipinos are employed in the BPO industry, all of whom needing special assistance in securing crucial services from the government.
Many of these workers work outside the normal 8AM-5PM work hours, even during so-called “graveyard shifts.”
As such, Roxas’ service caravan will serve as a one-stop shop for BPO workers in availing government services such as PhilHealth, PAG-IBIG, SSS, and NBI clearance.
Roxas, together with Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III, plans to make these government services accessible even after regular government office hours.
He also listened to a number of concerns from call center agents in a dialogue, such as security of tenure, which many contractual BPO employees still do not have.
Roxas also tapped the Philippine National Police (PNP) to reinforce police visibility in Cebu to ensure the safety of workers who walk the streets in the wee hours of the night, and of their families who are left behind at home.
