In the Philippines, celebrating the New Year comes with preparing 13 round fruits. The custom dwells on the number 13 as a lucky number, while its sweet flavor is believed to avoid bitterness all throughout the year. Some believers had it that the fruit’s shape represents the form of a coin or money, a practice that is reportedly Chinese origin that invites more money to come in the household or business. It is popularly termed in Cebuano as “Palihi”.
