Reports Say Google to Offer AR Headset in 2024
Google is working on Project Iris, an augmented reality headset that it hopes to ship in 2024.
The standalone wearable headset would feature a special Google CPU, outward-facing tracking cameras, and Android, however given the job advertisements, a custom OS is a possibility. To address the processing power limits of a headset, it may also rely on cloud-based rendering.
Project Iris is a return to a hardware category in which Google has a tumultuous past. It all started with Google Glass’s splashy, ill-fated debut in 2012. Then, in 2019, a multi-year campaign to market virtual reality headgear gradually fizzled away.
Clay Bavor, who answers directly to CEO Sundar Pichai and also runs Project Starline,an ultra-high-resolution video chat booth that was demoed last year, is in charge of the initiative.
Project Iris, if Starline is any indicator, may be a technological marvel. (CT)
