Region 11 Bags 1st Gold In Palarong Pambansa 2016
A female runner of Region 11 or Davao Regional Athletic Association clinched the first gold medal in the ongoing Palarong Pambansa 2016 being held in the province of Albay.
This was announced in a press conference on Monday morning by Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali who said that not only did Region 11 get the first gold medal but also grabbed the title of new record breaker.
The region’s Mea Gey Alialiah Ninura clocked 10:03.40 in the 3,000-meter run to deserve the gold medal.
Ninura broke the record in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa in Tagum City gained by Jie Anne Calis of Region 10 who dashed the 3,000-meter span in 10:10.16.
Calis only placed second to Ninura and brought home the silver medal by placing in second by making the distance in 10:07.80, wherein she broke her own record last year.
The bronze medal was won by Camila Tubiano, also of Region 10, who posted 10:45.00.
Umali said record breaking usually occurs in athletic and swimming where the DepEd tallied 15 record breakers last year, especially in swimming.
He said that next year or in the Palarong Pambansa 2017, they expect more records to be broken and more record holders owing to the implementation of the senior high school wherein the age limit of the athletes will go higher so that the performance of every player will be better.
Meanwhile, DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro, through Umali, thanked Albay for the successful holding of the opening of the Palarong Pambansa 2016 on Sunday afternoon and the excellent accommodation of all delegations in their respective billeting centers.
Despite some petty problems emerging, the opening ceremonies, he said, were generally orderly, peaceful and festive and the present games being played are all in order.
Armin said they expect the entire games to be smooth until the closing and awarding ceremonies on Saturday.(PNA) BNB/FGS/JH/CBD
