REC Donates SolarBox To Philippine Red Cross

Singapore – REC, a leading global provider of solar energy solutions, has donated a 20kW solar-diesel hybrid container (SolarBox) to the Philippine Red Cross.

The SolarBox is an integrated, off-grid solar solution catering to regions that experience unreliable access to the grid. It is composed of a solar array, inverter system and battery bank packed into a shipping container which can be assembled on site within two days.

This SolarBox was assigned to Sungko Barangay on Bantayan Island in the Philippines, a community that was devastated by Hurricane Haiyan in November last year. The 20 kW system size ensures that solar power, whether directly or stored in the battery bank, will continuously support the electricity load of the Barangay more than 95% of the time with the diesel generator serving as a backup.

REC partnered with Temasys Communications (Temasys) for this joint corporate social responsibility initiative. Temasys is a Singapore- based company that specializes in the development and deployment of communications solutions.

“With our donation of the SolarBox, REC hopes to reach out to the community of Sungko Barangay who were affected by Hurricane Haiyan ( Codenamed ‘Yolanda’ in the Philippines) and improve their way of life. Together with our partner Temasys, we will be providing the local community with a stable and reliable source of electricity, as well as much needed communication and internet access. REC is proud to be a part of the community’s growth and we are confident that the SolarBox will make a difference to their lives,” said Øyvind Hasaas, CEO of REC Solar ASA.

“The internet connection will additionally be facilitating multiple local and global communications, both in the use of advanced diagnostic medical equipment powered by the SolarBox, as well as with system monitoring and troubleshooting by REC’s engineering team. This is especially vital for installations in remote locations,” added Tom Preststulen, Chairman of Temasys Communications Pte. Ltd.

REC is looking beyond the provision of basic light and power sources to Sungko Barangay. In the long term, it has plans to offer similar systems for local businesses, hospitals and communities within Southeast Asia.

The donation of the SolarBox embodies the REC vision – that every person benefits from electricity garnered directly from the sun. As a responsible corporate citizen, REC considers the long term value and impact of its business practices and believes in helping local communities to grow and sustain themselves.

REC, with its SolarBox donation, is aiming to help the local community in Sungko Barangay, Philippines who were affected by Hurricane Haiyan (Yolanda).
