Rama Wants Motorcycle Lane in SRP
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants to have an exclusive lane for motorcycles at the South Road Properties (SRP) as a way to minimize, if not to totally stop, road accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles.
The mayor has instructed Jonathan Tumulak, operations chief of the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM), to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) about the matter.
The coastal highway passing along the SRP is a national road that is why the mayor will just ask the DPWH officials to make a study about his plan and to implement it.
The statistics showed that during the month February there were over a dozen of road accidents, most of them involve motorcycles, at the SRP, killing a Dutch national and injuring several others.
“Moingon dayon sila nga wala ko’y right nga mo-close sa karsada sa SRP… unya tan-awa, naa’y patay. Dili man kaha maka-close ang mayor, ipa-close sa DPWH,” the mayor said.
Rama said he will inform DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson about the recent accident at SRP killing motorcycle rider Harald Heinz Walter that was ran over by a cement mixer truck.
The mayor earlier proposed to ban the motorcycles from passing the SRP to prevent accidents, but several motorcycle riders strongly opposed the proposal.
Interviewed by METROCEBUNEWS, Tumulak said he will meet with DPWH officials next week to discuss the proposal of Mayor Rama to designate a motorcycle lane at SRP.
