As part of their staff development program to enhance outdoor skills, 12 instructors from Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc – Kool Adventure Camp (RAFI – KAC) climbed Mt. Apo in Davao on March 24 to 27.

The expedition was designed to test and enhance Judgement Skills in the Outdoors, and raise the Risk Assessment and Management Skills and Wilderness First Responder Skills of the instructors.

Towering over Southern Mindanao Mt. Apo, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage site, is known as the highest mountain in the Philippines,.

The program also improves the instructor’s practical rigging methods in a wilderness environment.

“RAFI-KAC has always ensured that its instructors have a level of competence befitting to someone managing a group of 16 individuals with the assurance that they not only are able to facilitate learning from the experience but also stay intact as a team safely and ready to address any difficulties that they may face along the way,” said Daphne Dia, one of the instructors and also the Assistant Director for Youth Development Programs of KAC.

She added that the institution can only guarantee the competence of the instructors by undergoing extensive training that develops judgment skills, outdoor living skills, situational analysis and risk assessment along with the soft skills training required.

KAC has been offering adventure education programs for leadership and team development for youth and professionals for the last decade. It is a program under the Leadership and Citizenship focus area of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI). It has recently opened the Philippines’ first fully dedicated adventure education center last August 2.
