PWDs, Senior Citizens And Youth To Lead Earth Day Celebration

Hundreds of persons with disability (PWD), senior citizens and youth employees of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here will take the lead in this year Earth Day celebrations on April 22.

Tirso Parian, Jr, deputy director for Management Services and In-Charge, Office of the Regional Director of DENR in Central Luzon, said that this year Earth Day celebration would highlight the vital role played by the PWD, senior citizen and the youth sector of the society in protecting and conserving the environment.

Every member of the society even those that are physically challenge, the older and younger ones have significant impact to save mother Earth. Because in the end, planet Earth is our one and only home”, he explained.

He said various activities had been lined up, focusing on the international theme “Trees for the Earth, Let’s get planting” while adopting the local campaign slogan “Step Up and Deliver, #Green EnvironmentGawingForever”.

This years’ theme underscored the important role of trees and forests as the number one shield of planet Earth against global warming and climate change, he added.

Signing of covenant to save mother Earth with the PWD, senior citizens, youth sector and other stakeholders of the DENR will be one of the features of this year celebrations.

Youth members of DENR will be conducting massive clean-up of waterways, barangay roads and office premises synchronize with the city wide campaign of the local government of San Fernando.

The PWD and senior citizen , on the other hand, will take part in the soil potting as one of the many processes involve in nursery operations in preparation for the coming tree planting season this June to September.

Environmental education lecture on solid waste management and ecological film showing will be the finale of this year’s 46th Earth Day festivity.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in April 22, 1970, pioneered by American senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing the catastrophic oil spill in Sta. Barbara, California in the U.S.

In the Philippines, Presidential Proclamation No. 1482 was signed in 2008 declaring that year as Year of Planet Earth and the month of April every year thereafter as the Month of Planet Earth. (PNA) RMA/ZST/FEM/PS
