PTV-4 Forum on Countering Violent Extremism Set June 9
Realizing the need for a comprehensive approach to countering the spread of terrorism and violent extremism, the People’s Television Network (PTV-4) will be airing Friday a program focused on the important role of civil society and local government units in addressing the said threats.
The program will be aired on June 9, 7 p.m. by the state-run television network under the helm of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO).
Among the invited speakers are: Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Acting Secretary Catalino Cuy; Undersecretary Diosita Andot, of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP); Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla and/or Brig. Gen. Melquiades Feliciano; Datu Amir Wagas of Salaam Ateneo; Ryan Oliver of the National Youth Congress, and Christopher Sumulong of Duterte Youth.
Also invited to share his observations through Skype is Dr. Rohan Gunaratna of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore.
Among the topics to be discussed are the root cause of terrorism and extremism, the role of local governments and civil society including the youth and netizens, as well as government programs to help address the spread of violent extremism in the country.
The United Nations (UN) Security Council, in its Resolution 2178 (2014), underscores that countering violent extremism (CVE) is an essential element in addressing the international threat to international peace and security by encouraging member states to engage with local communities and non-government organizations in developing strategies against violent extremism.
