Province to Build New Landfill in Northern Cebu
With Gov. Hilario Davide III’s recent issuance of Executive Order No. 4 dated March 25 to reorganize the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB) and its Technical Working Group, Cebu Province is well on its way towards ensuring an effective and efficient implementation of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act 9003).
In the coming months, Cebu residents will be empowered to take active part in proper waste disposal. Also, they will be witness to how the reorganization of PSWMB will pave the way for the Province to have another sanitary landfill.
One of the actions after the reorganization of the PSWMB is to open the proposed sanitary landfill within this year. This initiative by the Cebu Provincial Government through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office was disclosed during the Barangay District Conference last April 8 at the Sacred Heart Center.
Atty. Chad Estella said that this project is costly but definitely will attract more investors, spelling more income for the Cebu Provincial Government.
The proposed sanitary land fill will be built at Barangay Dawis Sur, Municipality of Carmen within this year. A feasibility study has been done as an essential process in determining the importance of this project. This future landfill will serve the people of northern Cebu.
Estella said that this 17-hectare lot in Dawis Sur is a privately-owned land and was purchased during the previous administration. The exact area of the landfill is 800 meters away from the national highway and 400 meters away from a small community. (CLDR/Zeus Canillo (CNU Intern))
