Prince Philip to Be Laid to Rest Today
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and late husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will be laid to rest today, Saturday, April 17, 2021.
Prince Philip died at age of 99 on the April 9, 2021 at Windsor Castle. He died two months short of his 100th birthday.
The Duke of Edinburgh, born as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, was born on June 10, 1921, married then Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, after both having served during the Second World War.
An accomplished military man, Prince Philip received medals and awards for gallantry showed during his naval service during World War II, who at then 21 years of age became one of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy.
the prince actively participated in the Battle of Crete, Battle of Cape Matapan, the Allied invasion of Sicily, Operation Dragoon, Operation Robson, Operation Lentil, and the Battle of Okinawa, among others.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip wed on November 20, 1947 and enjoyed an almost 74-year marriage, the longest-enduring marriage in British royal history.
The late Duke of Edinburgh has been hospitalized numerous times in the years leading to his death. He was hospitalized on April 3, 2018 to King Edward VII’s Hospital for a planned hip replacement. He was then involved in a car crash on January 2019. On December 20 to 24, 2019, Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital to receive treatment for a pre-existing condition, according to Buckingham Palace, which was a precautionary measure, the Palace added.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed and expressed deep sorrow over the death of the late Duke of Edinburgh.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.” the statement said.
Prince Philip’s official cause of death is still to be revealed by Buckingham Palace. (GFB)
