President Won’t Support 4-year Term Limit with Re-election — Palace

Malacañang on Wednesday said President Benigno Aquino III won’t support four-year term limit with re-election for the president.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda made this comment after Vice President Jejomar Binay told the media on Wednesday that he was for four-year term limit with re-election.

” We don’t share the opinion of Vice President Binay, especially (because) the President firmly believes on a single term,” Lacierda said in a media briefing in Malacanang.

”Because the logic in a single-term presidency is that the President can focus on all that needs to be done within the six-year term,” he added.

Lacierda said the under the six-year term limit, the President will have the duties to ensure that good governance prevails during his six-year presidency.

”He doesn’t have to wait for another four years to make good on his promises on the first four years,” Lacierda said.

Lacierda believes that President Aquino has done so much in the first five years of his six-year term that will end in June next year.

” There are things that need to be done further, but that has to be done and continued by the person who would follow the reforms under the ‘tuwid na daan,” Lacierda explained. (PNA) RMA/JFM
