President of ICRC to Visit Yemen
The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, will visit Yemen from 8 to 10 August 2015 to highlight the dire humanitarian situation in the country.
It is estimated that more than 3,800 people have been killed and 1.3 million displaced during the recent conflict. Civilian infrastructure and medical facilities have been severely damaged across large parts of the country. Humanitarian workers have not been spared: four volunteers with the Yemen Red Crescent Society have been killed since March this year.
“We are particularly concerned about attacks on medical facilities and personnel. Moreover, deliveries of food, water and medicine must be facilitated not hampered. The human cost of this conflict is such that no family in Yemen today has been left unaffected,” said Peter Maurer.
During his trip to Yemen, Mr Maurer will visit different locations, meet ICRC personnel and hold meetings with leading officials in the country.
