President Duterte Leads Aguinaldo Shrine Independence Day Rites
Today’s 120th Independence Day celebration at the Aguinaldo Shrine here had no less than President Duterte as guest of honor of the festivity.
Before the flag-raising ceremony, the President was welcomed by Cavite Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla together with Kawit Mayor Angelo Emilio G. Aguinaldo and National Historical Commission Chair, Dr. Rene R. Escalante.
This is the first time he attended the annual Freedom day commemmoration in Kawit, Cavite, an event witnessed by a multitude of people despite heavy downpour and unexpected demonstration by a small gorup of protesters.
President Duterte who remained calm said he welcomed the protest as it was a way of expressing “freedom of speech.”
In his speech, the President called on every Filipino to take inspiration from the bravery and heroism of “our forefathers who have given their lives to attain the freedom that we all are enjoying today.”
“By cherishing the sovereignty that is borne out of the sweat and blood of our heroes, we stand firm and unwavering in our conviction to create a brighter and better future for all Filipinos – regardless of their status in life,” Duterte said.
He also urged everyone to effect “meaningful and lasting change in our communities as we collectively battle the social ills of corruption, illegal drugs and criminality that impede our progress as a nation,” as he vowed to continue to do so to get rid of corrupt government officials and employees.
The President ended his message reaffirming his desire for a comfortable life for all Filipinos. (Ruel Francisco, PIA-Cavite)
