Pope Francis condemns ‘slave labour’ in Bangladesh
Pope Francis condemned on Wednesday ‘slave labour’, stating the poor conditions of the factory workers in the building that collapsed in Bangladesh.
The deadly collapse of the Rana Plaza building near Dhaka claimed the lives of at least 400 people and injured hundreds.
At a private mass, the Pope said he was shocked to know that some of the workers who fell victims to the collapse were only paid 38 euros a month.
In a report by the Vatican radio, the Pope said looking only to make profit and not paying fair wage “go against the will of God”.
In Dhaka, crowds gather to demand death penalty to the building owner and better working conditions for the workers.
According to the European Union, “appropriate action” to improve working conditions in Bangladesh factories is being considered.
The Bangladesh garment industry has already faced public scrutiny prior to the incident due to poor state of the workers, low wages, and dangerous conditions of the factories.
Mohammed Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza building, is in police custody. Several other factory owners and engineers have also been charged for negligence.
