PNP Intensifies Checkpoint Operations for Polls
The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has intensified checkpoint operations in the city to implement the ban on firearms and other deadly weapon during the election period.
CCPO Chief Police Col. Royina M. Garma assured that Philippine National Police (PNP) will be upholding the protection of human rights during their conduct of checkpoints.
The Chief of PNP Human Rights Affairs Office, Police Brigadier Gen. Dennis Siervo, was also present to witness the conduct of checkpoint in Brgy. Pit-os Road, Cebu City.
“In the conduct of police checkpoints, all PNP personnel must promote and protect the citizen’s rights to dignity, privacy, and freedom of movement,” Siervo said.
During the checkpoint, around 45 motorcycles and ten private vehicles were flagged down and checked.
CCPO apprehended six traffic violators for overloading, back riding without helmet, driving with expired license and registration, among others.
Siervo noted that among the most glaring offense committed by motorists was the violation of Republic Act 10666 or the Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act, when CCPO personnel nabbed a couple of motorcycle drivers with toddler passengers in major public roads.
It was found during the same checkpoint that motorists were unaware of the existence of the law.
“Efforts must be intensified to raise awareness of the existence of Republic Act number 10666 to avoid violations,” Siervo said.
“While the PNP and the Land Transportation Office effectively implement transportation regulations, it is also the shared responsibility of those involved in the public service such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Council for the Welfare of Children to cause information dissemination and advocacy drive of the said law to secure the safety of children passengers,” he explained.
