PHL Contributes to Montreal Protocol
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 revealed that the Philippines has been contributing to an international agreement known as the Montreal Protocol, an agreement which is aimed at protecting the ozone layer.
DENR7’s Environmental Education and Information Coordinator Rechale Ybañez said the Philippine’s contribution to this project is the phasing out of almost 100 percent of its production and consumption of ozone depleting substances (ODS).
Ybañes also said the country, in 2012, was also able to help when the hole in the ozone layer was said to be in its smallest since the past years.
The Montreal Protocol is recognized worldwide as the most effective multilateral environmental treaty to rehabilitate the depleting ozone layer, thereby averting the greenhouse effect. Ybañez said the Philippines’ active participation to it is proof of its commitment to help reduce global warming. She urged the public to also participate by minimizing its carbon footprints.
