The Department of Tourism (DOT) has launched the International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress, positioning the country as a major health and wellness travel destination.

The event, held at the Grand Hyatt Manila on October 14, brought together key industry leaders, healthcare professionals, and international delegates to promote the Philippines’ unique offerings in this growing sector.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized the country’s commitment to offering both modern healthcare and traditional wellness practices, such as the ancient Filipino healing massage, hilot. “The Filipino spirit of compassionate care, or malasakit, is at the heart of our wellness tourism offerings,” she said. “We aim to provide a complete wellness experience that combines advanced medical services with the nurturing qualities of our traditional practices.”

The congress, themed “Aruga,” a Filipino term for care and nurturing, highlighted the Philippines’ potential to attract global health and wellness tourists.

The event showcased a range of health services, from medical treatments in state-of-the-art facilities to wellness retreats offering natural, soothing environments.

Agora Group Chief Operations Officer Hadi Malaeb praised the country’s hospitality and potential. “With its skilled healthcare professionals, competitive pricing, and natural beauty, the Philippines is poised to become a key player in the health and wellness tourism sector,” Malaeb said.

The congress featured panel discussions, business networking sessions, and an exhibition displaying Filipino wellness products.

Attendees from over 38 countries explored the opportunities for collaboration in promoting the Philippines as a premier destination for health and wellness tourism. (ASC)
