PH Moves Up in Mobile, Fixed Broadband Global Internet Speed Rankings
The Filipino’s call for faster internet speeds has seemingly been answered as the Philippines climbed up the global internet speed rankings.
This comes as Ookla released their December Speedtest Global Index which ranks global mobile and fixed broadband speeds month-on-month.
The Philippines’ mobile internet download speed climbed up to 19.20 megabits per second (Mbps) in December of 2021, up from 18.68 Mbps the previous month, while fixed broadband download speed increased from 46.44 in November 2021 to 50.26 Mbps in December of the same year.
This equates to a single rank increase for the Philippines–from 90th to the 89th spot for mobile global performance, while the country jumped nine places to 63rd for fixed broadband global performance, up from the 72nd spot.
The government has been focusing on the country’s internet performance and prices as of late, with the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), along with other government agencies such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, Department of Public Works and Highways, issued a Joint Memorandum Circular for poles, fiber ducts, and the laying of cables.
