PAGASA Cebu Warns Public on Effect of Lightning
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Cebu Chief Engr. Al Quiblat warns the public not to take for granted the deadly effect of lightning.
In the recent 2nd Quarter Full Council Meeting of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC-7) Quiblat said that July will be the peak of thunderstorms and along with this are the occurrence of lightning, burst of rains and moderate to strong wind.
“We shoud be aware of thunderstorm and we should know the precautions,” he said.
In case of lightning Quiblat stressed the measures that should be considered.
“Squat, heels together and cover ears, stay away from posts and pointed objects, turn off electricity supply and do not touch anything made of metal,” Quiblat said.
This is so because lighting causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly even if you are over 100 meters away from the strikes.
Fir the same reason, Quiblat also added that it is not a safe move to cover under the shade of tress when lightning strikes.
“It’s wrong decision to cover under the tress,” Quiblat stressed.
He then said that by the start of July, thunderstorms with lightning will be experienced by most part of the country to include Central Visayas and other regions. (ays/PIA7)
