In line with the celebration of National Seafarers Day 2015, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) 7 conducted a health and safety forum for seafarers at the Social Hall of Stella Maris Seafarers Center last September 23, 2015.

The forum officially started at 10:00 AM with a prayer led by Rev. Fr. John C. Mission, the Apostleship of the Sea-Cebu Chaplain and was followed by a welcome message delivered by Dir. Wilfreda L. Misterio, Regional Director of OWWA 7.

There were around 181 seafarers who attended the event, including some dependents.

The health and safety forum aimed to empower seafarers to uphold health and wellness while being precautious of possible dangers and hazards they are most likely exposed to due to the nature of their work.

Aside from OWWA, several government agencies also attended and graced the said event. They include the Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) – REU 7, Social Security System (SSS)- Cebu Branch Office 7, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) 7, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 7, and National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO) 7. Each official representative from these government agencies offered their respective programs and services available for seafarers to take advantage of especially when the need arises.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also attended to deliver an inspiring message. He emphasized the importance of our Filipino seafarers not just in fueling the Philippine economy but also their socio-economic contribution in the international scene.

To further help the seafarers attain good health and avoid possible dangers and alarming chronic illnesses, Dr. Lorifel Go, Occupational Medicine Diplomate and Accredited Resource Speaker, also discussed several illnesses and its causes that most seafarers are vulnerable to. She also recommended practical health measures for seafarers to follow.

What made the forum a lot more exciting was the raffle draw facilitated by OWWA officers. The raffle draw was in courtesy of Sun Life Financial and several training centers and manning agencies which include: Cebu Ace Maritime International Inc., Rielt Maritime Inc., Far East Maritime Foundation Inc., Cebu Gems Innovation and Career Development Center Inc.

Mugs, powerbanks, bluetooth speakers, gift certificates, flat irons, rice cooker and a washing machine were given away to the lucky winners.

Before the forum ended, the participants were also updated with the OWWA’s programs and services delivered by Dineza Espejo and Allyson Tanupan, who are both OWWA 7 officers.
