Osmeña Proposes Partial Ban on Private Vehicles on 2 Mandaue-Mactan Bridges to Ease Traffic
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña has proposed a ban on private vehicles from the two Mandaue-Mactan bridges for a few hours each day to ease traffic congestion.
Osmeña said the ban would take effect only during rush hours, but would “reduce a big amount of traffic.”
“Many are complaining about the traffic leading to Mactan. Some have to make sacrifices,” he said.
But officials of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team) and Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System (CTMS) don’t believe the ban would be effective.
They believe, instead, that number-coding for both private and public transportation would work better.
The also proposed to regulate old jeepneys to help decongest both the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridge during rush hours.
Osmeña said most private cars have only one to two persons inside, yet occupy the same amount of space as public transport vehicles that carry more passengers.
He said he also sees the need to add a mass transit system that will comfortably bring passengers to their destinations.
He suggested the use of big buses to transport passengers, including those from Talisay to Mactan. (PNA) SCS/EB/SSC
