Osmeña Eyes Sardines For Trash Scheme to Save Fund
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he is planning to implement a “sardines for trash” scheme to help save funds in the city.
Under this scheme, Osmeña said cans of sardines to be given to people who take their trash to garbage trucks.
Osmeña said the city will no longer be hiring additional garbage loaders and buying new trucks.
“This is only an experiment. We’re going to try it now and then if it works, we will just give out sardines to everybody,” Osmeña said.
Cebu City Department of Public Services (DPS) chief Roberto Cabarrubias said four compactor trucks will be used as storage of the wastes, in addition to the existing garbage trucks of the barangays and the city.
Osmeña said there are no specifics yet on how many sardines will be given in exchange for the garbage delivered.
Osmeña said the DPS will try it out first, then come up with rules.
Osmeña said the set-up will save the city from gasoline allocation for trucks and fewer loaders will be needed. (PNA) LAP/EB/RSM
