Osmeña Eyes Motorcycle-For-Hire Terminal in Cebu City

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Monday he is planning to construct a terminal for motorcycles-for-hire, locally known as “habal-habal”, to set a model on how to legitimize their drivers.

The motorcycles-for-hire usually ply areas where regular public utility vehicles do not operate.

They also operate in urban areas during rush hours, especially in the evening, when it is difficult to get a taxi.

Osmeña said the habal-habal terminal will be established near JY Square in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City where the concentration of such motorcycles is high.

He said he wants the senior citizens in the village to supervise and set the standard rules for the drivers, since they know the background of the drivers.

The mayor also said that he will work with certain agencies to hold workshops for the drivers.

He also said he plans to introduce a food-for-work program wherein the city government would provide habal-habal drivers a rice subsidy in exchange for taking children to school.

Under this scheme, he said, the children will no longer have to walk far to get to school while the drivers can provide for their families. (PNA) CVL/EB/SGP
