Oslob Still Feeds Whalesharks

Despite recommendations from the Regional Development Council (RDC)-Bicol region to stop the feeding of whalesharks in Oslob town, the local government has yet to make any move heeding this call.

A close-in personnel of Oslob Mayor Ronaldo Guarin, who refused to be named, said they don’t see a reason why they should stop the feeding activities. The personnel said that if the RDC-Central Visayas would agree with RDC-Bicol region’s recommendation, then they should come up with plausible reasons for them to stop the feeding of the whalesharks.

The RDC-7 has yet to come up with its resolution on the issue following RDC-Bicol’s stand. Regional Development Council-Bicol chairman and Albay Governor Joey Salceda wrote the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Tourism requesting to put a stop on the feeding of whalesharks in Oslob, saying it is hurting the giant creatures.

The letter stated that “for sustainable development, Oslob should follow what Donsol, Sorsogon is doing to its whale sharks.”
