Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and a large part of the human population mandated to quarantine in their respective homes, many people are discovering gardening or collecting ornamental plants as a passion. The best part? People are recognizing that this new trend may be profitable.

Ever since the start of the quarantine many people are engaging into gardening and collecting plants, not only in the Philippines but also the entire world.

A certain Ricky said that he graduated with culinary degree, but unfortunately, the pandemic forced him to look for an alternative way to earn a living.

I don’t have any company to apply to since the tourism industry is down at the moment and hotels are currently on hiring freeze so it’s hard. What I’m doing now, sir, is invest in these plants since this is the current trend,)” said Ricky.

The global market trend of ornamental plants and even flowers may reach up to $28.98 billion, according to Technavio.

The use of flowers, either for decorative and aestethic purposes drives the said market to its growth.

Flowers and ornamental plants are widely used for decorative purposes such as social events, festivals, special occasions and even for business.

In western markets, flowers such as stephanotis, hydrangeas, tulips, roses and more, are the ones who are highly popular among social gatherings.

The growing focus on the consumer’s increased expenditure on various flowers and ornamental plants, and the availability of them are some factors that fuel the global growth of these plants in the global market. (MLC)
